Learning

The Foundation Phase Framework

At The Learning Tree we base the children’s learning and development on The Foundation Phase, which sets the curriculum and outcomes for 3-7-year olds.

For our younger children we have adapted the Foundation Phase so that the outcomes suit their stage of learning and development.

The Seven Areas of Learning

There are 7 statutory areas of learning that must be provided to all children whilst at The Learning Tree.

Personal and Social Development, Well-being, and Cultural Diversity

Focused on developing children’s self-esteem, moral values, and personal beliefs, this area teaches children about themselves, their relationships, and the people surrounding them. They develop an understanding that others have differing needs, abilities, beliefs and views.

Positive attitudes are encouraged to enable children to become aware of and appreciate the diversity of cultures and languages that exist in Wales. They should become increasingly aware of the traditions and celebrations that are important within Welsh culture.

Children are supported in becoming confident and independent thinkers and learners. As their self-identity develops, children begin to express their feelings and to empathise with others.

Language, Literacy, and Communication

Children are immersed in language experiences and activities, developing their skills through talking, signing/communicating and listening. We encourage them to communicate their needs, feelings, and thoughts with those around them, as well as asking questions and taking part in conversations.

Children are given opportunities to choose and use reading materials, as well as enjoy mark-making and writing experiences. They are also helped to develop an awareness of Wales as a country with two languages and to show positive attitudes to speakers of languages other than Welsh and English. Language skills learned in one language will support the development of knowledge and skills in another language.

Mathematical Development

Practical play works alongside oral activities to develop our children’s understanding of maths. We explore real-life problems to give children a basic mathematical understanding and start exploring numbers.

We encourage children to develop a range of flexible methods for working mentally with numbers, encouraging them to solve problems by communicating their ideas and asking questions. They explore, estimate, and solve real-life problems, learning in both the indoor and outdoor environment through sorting, matching, comparing, and exploring and creating simple patterns and relationships.

Welsh Language Development

At The Learning Tree, we teach Welsh as well as English, encouraging children to learn to communicate in Welsh to the best of their ability. Their language skills are developed through communicating in a range of practical activities, which help build on and increase children’s previous knowledge and experiences.

We also offer children Welsh reading materials and encourage them to develop their mark making and writing skills in Welsh. Language skills learned in one language will support the development of knowledge and skills in another.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Children are encouraged to experience the world through enquiry, investigating the indoor and outdoor environments in a safe and supported way. Their natural curiosity about the world around them helps them to begin to understand their environment.

Using all their senses, they are encouraged to enjoy learning by exploration, enquiry, experimentation, asking questions and trying to find answers. At The Learning Tree, children learn to demonstrate care, responsibility, concern and respect for all living things and the environment.

The Learning Tree promotes children’s physical development through indoor and outdoor activities. We encourage them to enjoy physical activity, connecting their developing sense of self-image, self-esteem and confidence with their movement, teaching them about the importance of exercise, rest, and diet.
